Seth MacFarlane Neil deGrasse Tyson and Ann Druyan sit down for this panel discussion before the premiere of Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey.
Cosmos: A Personal Voyage
It has been 30 years since the original Cosmos featuring Carl Sagan was shown on tv. With the huge popularity of astrophysicist and science educator Neil deGrasse Tyson at an all time high, it only makes sense that the reboot of the beloved miniseries happens now. For those of you not in the know. The original Cosmos was officially titled “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage” and debuted back in 1980. The TV documentary series appeared on PBS and focused on how science impacts our every day life and hit on topics such as debunking astrology and the expanse of the universe itself. Seth MacFarlane Neil deGrasse Tyson and Ann Druyan lay the case for why now is the perfect time to bring the series back.
Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey (Official Trailer)
“You realize that science is not just this subject from a textbook. It’s a human story. Discovery is human … It’s a celebration of human curiosity and why that matters to who and what we are.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson
The new series hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson is called “Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey.” The first episode aired in early March to raving reviews, to know one’s surprise. During a panel discussion that took place at comic con in October, Neil deGrasse Tyson explained why now is the perfect time to reboot the series. The panel discussion included Seth MacFarlane Neil deGrasse Tyson and writer Ann Druyan, as well as producers of the series Brannon Braga and Mitchel Cannold.
Cosmos On Fox
Seth MacFarlane was pivotal in brining Cosmos back to the small screen. As Ann Druyan said during the Panel QA, “Seth has been our champion.” Seth helped move Cosmos to Fox which was an odd choice for both parties involved from the onset. The team shopped the idea of bringing Cosmos back to multiple channels before settling on Fox as Ann explained “They didn’t want to give me relative control. They didn’t want to give me support. We couldn’t really do a ‘Cosmos’ that would be a worthy successor.” The relationship with Fox has changed that. Fox seems to love controversy. Although nothing in Cosmos is purposely controversial or even should be at all, people tend to feel Cosmos attacks their religion. At this point, it would be hard to argue against Fox being the perfect partnership for Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey. Seth MacFarlane Neil deGrasse Tyson and Ann Druyan all play a huge roll in the reincarnation of Cosmos along with producers Brannon Braga and Mitchel Cannold.
