When is the last time you watched Bill Nye The Science Guy? Seriously when is the last time? The show completely holds up and yet at the same time is more dated than Zack Morris’ cell phone. Okay… the show doesn’t really hold up at all but it’s still awesome. However, what does stand the test of time is the science and Bill Nye’s beautiful explanation of pseudoscience.
Bill Nye Destroys Pseudoscience
“If you want to deny evolution and live in your, in your, uh, world that’s completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the Universe, that’s fine. But don’t make your kids do it.” – Bill Nye
In this episode of Bill Nye The Science Guy, Bill Nye takes on the subject of pseudoscience. What is pseudoscience? As explained on wikipedia, pseudoscience is… “a claim, belief or practice which is presented as scientific, but does not adhere to a valid scientific method, lacks supporting evidence or plausibility, cannot be reliably tested, or otherwise lacks scientific status.”
Pseudoscience is sad and ultimately dangerous.
Not so long ago, the ideas of science were not as controversial as they seem to be now. More politicians claim to deny evolution now more than they ever had in the past 50 years. Not only is this pathetically sad but it is also dangerous. As Bill Nye takes on the subject of pseudoscience he explains: “Denial of evolution is unique to the United States…. People still move to the United States, and that’s largely because of the intellectual capital we have—the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn’t believe in that, it holds everybody back. Really. Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science. In all of biology. It’s like, it’s very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You’re just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place.”
