A few former NASA astronauts have come together with convincing evidence that Earth has been the victim of many more asteroid impacts than they had previously thought. This lovely announcement of more Earth bound asteroids, sure to scare the shit out of humanity, will come tomorrow, April 22nd, 2014. During the presentation the astronauts will present data that brings the previously presume astroid count up 10 fold.

We survived in the past, we can do it again.

The scariest part of tomorrows announcement isn’t only that more asteroids have hit Earth than once thought, but Ed Lu’s,  the CEO of B612 Foundation, to the point comment on how we survived. “Blind Luck.” In the future we might not be so luck and it would be dumb to rely solely on it. Ed Lu went on saying  “We want to identify and track these asteroids years before they reach earth, so that we get enough time to deflect them or bring change in their path.” A much more pro-active approach to dealing with Earth bound asteroids indeed.

The study of Earth bound asteroids.

Ed Lu’s B612 Foundation has joined forces with Ball Aerospace to build the S.I.S.T.M., or as otherwise known, the Sentinel Infrared Space Telescope Mission. This telescope will be in orbit between the Sun and Earth and will the movement of “dangerous” asteroids. Not all asteroids have Earth in it’s sights naturally. S.I.S.T.M. was privately-funded and will launch in 2018 by way of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.
